The fastest-growing sport in America, pickleball has climbed its way up the ranks to become a favorite among athletes, sports enthusiasts, and everyday people like you and me.

Those who are new to the sport, or simply want to get an idea of what others are wearing while they play, search the internet to explore what pickleball attire to wear on the courts.

This article will walk you through some of the best options for what to wear when playing pickleball, whether it's spring, summer, fall or winter!

What To Wear To Play Pickleball

One of the greatest things about pickleball is that there essentially is no dress code to play the sport. You wear whatever is comfortable for you!

Some leagues or courts in your area may have implemented basic dress codes, so be sure to check the rules and regulations before showing up. Overall, however, there are no blanket dress codes to worry about.

I've seen people play pickleball shirtless and wearing tight blue jeans.

Yikes! Most pickleballers would agree that tight blue jeans would be too confining to play the sport in, but it's an example of the freedom of attire choice you have when playing pickleball.

Generally, you want to wear loose-fitting clothing (that isn't too baggy) that provides you with a maximum range of motion and is comfortable to play in.

Any kind of athletic apparel should be fine.

But let's dive in deeper.

What To Wear To Pickleball If You're a Woman

Women who love pickleball, you're in luck, because there are scores of options for ladies when it comes to pickleball attire.

For bottoms, women are known to wear tennis skirts, skorts (a mix between shorts and a skirt), basic athletic shorts, yoga pants, yoga shorts, leggings, sweat shorts, sweat pants, jogging pants, dresses, and anything that can be worn to the gym for fitness training.

The important thing to remember is that pickleball requires lots of motion and flexible movement. You should wear outfits and apparel that you can move around freely in. Again, comfort is imperative when playing pickleball.

Prioritize your comfort!

Also, consider that you'll be bending over a lot to pick up pickleballs (or your pickleball paddle if you play pickleball as horribly as I do).

Don't wear pants or shorts that are too tight, otherwise, you might split your pants and everyone will have a good laugh at you.

For tops, women can wear anything breathable and flexible that will complement the wide range of movements that pickleball requires. Try to avoid anything too stiff and restricting.

When playing pickleball, women wear fitness tank tops, premium soft-style t-shirts, sports bras, long-sleeve tops, moisture-wicking athletic shirts, and anything that can be worn to the gym for fitness training.

Remember, prioritize your comfort!

It's perfectly fine to wear shorts and a comfy pickleball t-shirt when you're playing pickleball.

What to Wear To Pickleball If You're a Man

I've played pickleball for many years with men of all ages, and I can tell you most of them aren't looking for anything fancy.

The consensus among the male population seems to be regular athletic shorts and a soft-style t-shirt when playing pickleball in the fall, spring and summer.

When it gets colder in the winter, they might toss on a pair of sweatpants and a light jacket, but generally shorts and a T-shirt work just fine.

If you're a serious player who is training to play professionally, many pickleballers will opt for moisture-wicking athletic gear specifically tailored for pickleball and other high-intensity sports.

It's your choice.

Overall, any athletic or performance apparel that you typically wear to the gym, for fitness training or any casual sport is acceptable to wear while playing pickleball.

The important thing to remember is that you'll be moving around a lot when you're playing pickleball. There is a lot of upper and lower body motion that requires clothing that you can move around freely in.

Don't worry so much about fashion, worry about being comfortable, and your pickleball game will improve immensely!

What To Wear When Playing Pickleball in The Winter

If you're a tough guy, your attire will likely not change much when it gets colder. But if you're a wimp when it comes to the cold, you can simply upgrade from shorts to pants and shirt to a sweatshirt or long-sleeve shirt.

Light jackets and other winter accessories like beanie caps can also be worn, but don't weigh yourself down with too many accessories.

Most people who play pickleball seriously will dress in layers.

You might be freezing cold when you first get to the court, but after a game of pickleball, you'll be nice and toasty warm. Keep that in mind.

What Kind of Shoes Do I Wear To Play Pickleball?

There are stores and apparel companies that have designed shoes specifically for pickleball courts--indoor and outdoor--but typically any tennis shoe or comfortable athletic shoe is acceptable.

If you're playing indoors, wear some good court shoes that won't scuff, leave marks on the court or drag you down while you're playing pickleball.

Remember, comfort is priority number one. Make sure you're wearing comfortable athletic, fitness, training or sports shoes and you'll be good.

I've worn my running shoes when playing pickleball and they worked just fine.

I would advise against anything that will hinder your performance. So don't wear work boots, dress shoes or cowboy boots while playing pickleball (unless you really want to.)

One type of shoe, that you probably wouldn't imagine being a pickleball shoe, has become increasingly popular on the courts; sandals.

Yes, there are pickleball sandals and many people swear by them.

For me, however, I prefer a nice pair of tightly tied tennis shoes and a good pair of socks.

And for socks, make sure they're fitness or athletic socks to provide you with enough cushion and support for a vigorous game of pickleball.

Can I Wear Hats While Playing Pickleball?

Sure! Many people who play pickleball wear hats or headwear on the court. Men typically like baseball caps while women often opt for stylish tennis visors. Of course, whatever you prefer is up to you.

Hats with bills can be a great way to keep the sun out of your eyes while playing pickleball. Wear them if you want.

You can also wear sports sunglasses and shades.

What Should I Avoid Wearing While Playing Pickleball?

As we've said, pickleball doesn't really have a dress code, but there are certainly some things you'll want to avoid wearing while playing the sport.

We covered not wearing your $900 Italian leather dress shoes or steel-toe work boots while playing pickleball, but let's touch base with some other things you'll want to avoid wearing.

Jewelry and dangly things.

Avoid wearing anything that dangles. Consider leaving earrings, necklaces and other jewelry at home or in a sports bag until you've finished your match.

It's never a good idea to wear rings when playing any kind of high-intensity sport like pickleball.

Some people wear their wedding ring while playing pickleball and have never had any issues.

However, if some injury would befall you--such as falling on your hands, getting hit with a paddle by your partner etc.--your finger could get swollen and your ring might have to be cut off.

It happens, unfortunately.

Be smart. Wear only what is absolutely necessary to play a good game of pickleball and you'll be quite happy!

Bottom Line

Pickleball is a fun and energetic sport that has little to no dress code. However, you'll want to prioritize comfort and mobility when selecting pickleball attire.

Choose athletic gear, fitness apparel, sports attire and soft-style t-shirts that will maximize your performance and allow you free motion on the court.

Have fun and remember to stay out of the kitchen!
