Yes I Talk To My Dog and No I'm Not Crazy

Yes, I talk to my dog every day. And no, I'm not crazy! (At least, I don't think I am lol.)

I'm a busy, successful entrepreneur. I have a healthy social life and I am an active member of my community. My wife and I like to travel and meet new people as often as we can.

In short, we're regular, well-rounded people with very little propensity to become psychopathic serial killers.

So if you think that you might be crazy because you have conversations with your dog regularly, think again. It's perfectly sane and healthy to communicate with your furry friends.

Just remember that they learn and respond to short verbal commands, words, names, sentences, body language and gestures.

They're probably not following along too well if you're reading them The Great Gatsby or teaching them how to write a novel.

There is a correct way to talk to dogs, trust me.

There was a time when I sat on the couch with my pup and took the liberty to explain to him string theory and the vast componentry of quantum mechanics.

He certainly looked as perplexed and intrigued as I was when I first learned about quantum theory. But yes, he didn't understand a word I was saying.

Okay, I admit it, talking to your dog for an hour about science and physics is probably a little nutty, but I enjoyed it. And there's a part of me that believes he did, too.

Do Dogs Like When You Talk to Them?

Yes, dogs love it when you talk to them. Your friendly tone and good vibes give them comfort and assurance that you're pals and not enemies.

Your talking is perceived as a sign of affection and love, even if they don't understand English.

And while they do not understand English per se, they do understand it to some degree. When you talk to your dog, you are communicating with them. They are trying to understand you. They remember verbal cues and commands.

Dogs are smart, and they will, over time, learn how to effectively understand what you are saying to them.

But remember, as I mentioned before, you might not want to read your PhD thesis and expect them to comprehend it.

Talking to your dog is a method of relationship building with you and your pet (or as I call him, an upstanding member of our family).

Communication with your dog is a way to build trust and bonding. It is not only NOT crazy to talk to your dog, but it is actually very healthy and appropriate.

If you're not talking to your dog, they will feel neglected. They will get lonely and feel like they did something wrong.

Imagine if your friend, girlfriend, boyfriend, wife or husband just decided to stop talking to you. How would that make you feel?

If you want your dog to show you affection, you have to earn it. The proper way to earn your dog's affection is to provide for them; food, water, shelter, companionship, communication, and love.

The love you once had between you will fade away in their minds if you are not actively communicating with them regularly.

Talk to your dog!

The Bottom Line

Pets can understand human emotion. When you talk to them, they are listening, even if they can't understand the English language.

Talking to your dog helps to build and strengthen a bond together. It is perfectly normal to talk to your dog every day.

We recommend it!
